Description

Side feed injector seals are essential parts of the fuel injection system in many Subaru models, particularly those with horizontally opposed (Boxer) engines. They seal the injector against the fuel rail, preventing fuel leaks and helping to maintain consistent fuel pressure for efficient engine operation.

Materials

These seals are typically made from durable rubber or synthetic materials that withstand high temperatures and exposure to fuel.

Signs that replacement is due

  • Fuel leaks around the injectors
  • Decreased fuel efficiency
  • Engine misfires or rough idling
  • Strong smell of fuel in the engine bay

Replacement steps

  1. Preparation: gather the tools and replacement seals, and park the vehicle on a flat surface with the engine cool.
  2. Relieve fuel pressure: disconnect the negative battery terminal, then locate the fuel pressure relief valve and relieve the system pressure.
  3. Remove components: take off anything blocking access to the fuel rail (for example the intake manifold), disconnect the fuel rail from the fuel lines and carefully lift it off the injectors.
  4. Replace the seals: remove the injectors from the fuel rail, take off the old seals and fit the new ones, making sure they are seated properly.
  5. Reassemble: lightly grease the injector seals, refit the injectors to the fuel rail, reattach the rail to the engine and make sure all connections are secure. Refit any removed components and the battery terminal.
  6. Test: start the engine and check for fuel leaks. Confirm that it runs smoothly with no fuel smell or performance issues.

Compatibility

Make sure the replacement seals suit your specific Subaru model and engine type. OEM parts are often the best choice for fit and durability.

Maintenance

  • Inspect the injectors and seals regularly for wear or damage.
  • Replace the seals at the recommended intervals, or as soon as symptoms of failure appear.

Timely replacement of the injector seals is crucial for the performance and reliability of the fuel injection system. Following the correct procedure and using high-quality parts keeps the engine running efficiently and safely.
